While the rest of the world faces this wave after the coronavirus wave, China’s border blockades, strict checks, and strict quarantine policies have let most people live. People proceed as usual. China’s approach became a source of national pride.
“The success of this strategy has maintained a very low level of infection compared with the failure of liberal democracies, including the United States,” said Yanzhong Huang of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Now, a major outbreak in China’s most populous city, Shanghai, threatens to change all that, with signs of growing public discontent.
