A spokesman for the World Health Organization said the Omicron coronavirus variant had been designated a “variant of concern” but it was important not to panic.
Dr Margaret Harris told BBC World News’ Yalda Hakim the aim was to get the world’s alert, step-by-step surveillance and public health measures, but not overreact.
