History of NFL playing at Christmas
The NFL had its first Christmas doubles game on Saturday, December 25, 1971, when the Cowboys played the Vikings and the Dolphins played the Chiefs. The NFL only ran for 14 weeks that season, so those two games were knockouts of each division. The Cowboys, who went on to win the Super Bowl that year, beat the Vikings 20-12, while the Dolphins, the team the Cowboys beat, won 27-24 in injury time against the Chiefs. According to Pro Football Hall of Fame, it was the longest match in tournament history.
Since then, Pro Football Hall of Fame recorded an additional 21 games played at Christmas. The Cowboys have participated in five of those games, the most of any team, as they continue their record of appearing on television over the holidays. There have been three consecutive Christmas doubles from 2004 to 2006, and two consecutive sets in 2016 and 2017.
