As Sunday wraps up in Kyiv and in Moscow, here are the main developments for the day:

Russia is continuing its attacks on the Kyiv region after retreating from the capital. The Russian Defense Ministry on Sunday said it destroyed an ammunition factory near the city of Brovary, Kyiv region overnight. New wave of attacks serves as a reminder of the threat still facing Kyiv. Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko tweeted Saturday that this is the second consecutive day of explosions in the capital.

A group of Ukrainian fighters hiding in the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol were asked to surrender by Russian forces “to save their lives.” The Russian military launched a relentless attack on the port city in southeastern Ukraine, was the key to Moscow’s invasion of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the current situation in Mariupol is “inhumane.”

Humanitarian corridors were closed on Sunday due to the failure of negotiations between the two countries. That remains up to 100,000 civilians trapped in Mariupol with no way out.

At least 202 children were killed in Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion, According to preliminary data from the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office. In addition, more than 361 children were injured, officials said. UNICEF, the United Nations agency for children, estimates that nearly two-thirds of Ukrainian children have been displaced during the conflict.

On Easter Sunday, Pope Francis called for an end to the war in Ukraine. “May there be peace for war-torn Ukraine, so much tried by the violence and devastation of this cruel and senseless war it has been dragged into,” he told a crowd of worshipers in St Peter’s Square.
