What happened to Michael Thomas? The failure in trauma rehab ended hope in 2021 Saints return

Saints wide payee Michael Thomas has been pretty much absent for the 2021 season due to an ankle injury he picked up during the off-season.

Thomas began his NFL career with four consecutive seasons of 1,000 plus pitches. He also broke the NFL record for most catches in a season with 149 back in 2019. He was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2019. Then, in his fifth season in 2020, injury kept him playing in just seven games. And this season? Thomas has not scored a finish or a zero attempt this season.

So, what exactly happened to the Saints’ wide receiver? Here’s everything you need to know about Thomas’ injury time and when he’s set to return to the court.

What is Michael Thomas’s wound?

Thomas underwent ankle surgery last season due to an injury he picked up during the 2020 season. He has not played a single game this season because of a failure with surgery. As of November 3, Thomas was officially assigned to play for the rest of the season.

Here is the announcement by Thomas that he made on Twitter.

Michael Thomas injury history

Back in September 2020, Thomas sprained his ankle in the opening game of the Saints season. He then missed four games, which was the most he has ever missed in a row. Before that, he missed only one game in four seasons.

However, before Thomas could return from his ankle injury, he injured his hamstring during a training session which kept him out for two more games. He could play six more games last season before his ankle sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Thomas has decided to delay his ankle surgery until after the knockout stages so he can help midfielder Drew Brees advance in his final season as a midfielder. However, The Saints lost to the Buccaneers in the split round.

Thomas has finished his ankle surgery until June, which doesn’t help his start this season. Surgery was needed to repair the torn deltoid and other injured ligaments in his ankle. Saints coach Sean Payton wasn’t too pleased about Thomas’s postponement of surgery.

“Obviously with hindsight we wanted the surgery earlier in February or March. But it wasn’t. You know what it was like. And hopefully he’s had a good outcome for him. far, and hopefully we’ll get him back sooner rather than later,” said Payton, via ESPN in late July.

And, as we know it now, the Saints will bring Thomas back much later than expected.

Saints . WR depth chart

With Thomas absent this season, the Saints have relied on their other wide-ranging recorders, Deonte Harris, Marquez Callaway and Tre’Quan Smith. However, running back Alvin Kamara also helped, making 32 catches at 310 meters in the eight games he played.

Harris led the Saints’ total yards received with 427. Callaway followed closely behind with 396 and Smith with 236.

The Saints do not have a high ranking in the list of total recipients this season so far. With the most appearances in the Saints, Harris is only 61st in the NFL this season. The Rams’ Cooper Kupp wide receiver leads the NFL with 1,237 yards for comparison.
