Is not backyard barbecue or camping trip really complete without flame to extinguish overnight. But the biggest limitation for rang s’mores or chatting around a fire is the smoke in your face, and the way you can still smell the smoke hours after the fire has burned out. enter Kitchen alone, a supposedly nearly smoke-free fire pit and the answer to this exact problem. We got our hands on Solo Stove’s biggest fire pit, the Yukon, to see firsthand what this smokeless fire pit really is.

We tested the Yukon which is proven to be able to rumble heat and create a near-smokeless fire pit experience.
You’ve probably come across these attractive, stainless steel fire pits on social media or in a friend’s backyard. Although the look and feel of the Kitchen alone certainly sets it apart from most other cooktops backyard fire pit, the company claims that their 360 Degree Airflow Design is what really makes the Kitchen Alone stand out.
The Solo Kitchen fire divider is made of double-walled stainless steel. Air is pushed in through the bottom of the drum and also through the top vents to add a large amount of oxygen to the fire. The air at the top of the fire pit creates “secondary burns“And allows the Stove alone to get extremely hot while emitting far less smoke than competing fire pits. This also means that any wood you burn will reduce itself to almost nothing – just a small pile of ash and debris – making the cleanup process quite easy. When your fire has gone out and your Stove has cooled down, simply turn the stove upside down to pour out all the fire. The airflow design is what makes the Kitchen Alone a Kitchen Alone.
Solo Stove started back in 2011 with backpacks and camping stoves burning wood. It sells three fire pits – forest ranger ($199.99), Bonfire ($254.99) and Yukon ($449.99), ranges from 15 inches to 27 inches in diameter. Both the Ranger and Bonfire are portable fire pits due to their smaller size and included nylon carrying case. With the Yukon, currently the largest fire pit the brand sells, the Solo Stove has entered the backyard fire pit market.

We were immediately impressed with the low profile, simple design of the Solo Induction Cooker. In addition to Yukon, we chose full backyard package. This includes the fire pit, a rack to protect anything underneath, a shield to prevent any sparks from the flames, and a protective cover when your Solo Stove is not in use. .
Solo Stove recommends using the stand under the fire pit when using it on certain surfaces such as composite and wood floors. Since the fire inside the Stove alone was burning intensely, we felt it was safest to use both the stand and the shield during testing. Depending on the type of fire pit you purchase, you may receive rack $39.99 to $69.99 and a shield for $99.99 to $199.99.
To start the fire, we light four cigarette butts and then add logs. The instructions state that it is important not to pour too much wood into the fire pit so that the fire stays in the drum and between the top and bottom vents.
While we aspire to be, Kitchen Alone is not completely smokeless. When you light wood over a fire, it will naturally smoke because it is already hot enough to ignite. If you’re close to doing the lighting process, you’re bound to get smokey until your flame reaches full temperature, which took us 20 minutes during our testing. But once that fire flares up, you can sit around the Kitchen Alone and it will be almost completely smoke-free. Pro tip: Have someone else light you on fire so you don’t have to suffer any smoke.
After an hour of smokeless fire, Solo Stove brought another change with colorful flames. We added two color packs to our flame and it literally melts and spews when it sees color in the flame. The color packs say they can last up to an hour, but we found that the color in our flame only really lasted for about 20 minutes. So what did we do? We added more color packs because we like it so much. You can buy 10 color packs for $19.99.
Unlike other fire pits you’ve used in your backyard, the Solo Kitchen is not meant to be left without a roof. If water overfills the drum, it can negatively affect how the fire pit works, so it’s important to let the Stove cool alone and cover or move it somewhere like your garage. This is definitely an extra step you should consider, but it’s not a deal breaker for us as you can buy a Solo kitchen lid for this purpose. It’s not difficult to move the Stoves alone, but they’re a solid block and don’t have wheels, so the larger Yukon might require two people to move.
If you invest in a Backyard or Ultimate Bundle, hide – aka the cover – will be included with your purchase. The hide It’s made from PVC coated polyester and it’s a lot thicker than your typical outdoor oven or furniture cover.
You’ll also want to think ahead about when you want to stop using the fire pit because you need to let the fire go out on its own. You are instructed not to put out the fire in the Kitchen alone by dipping it in water. When our backyard campfire went out, there was minimal ash left in the Solo Kitchen. We turned it upside down, poured the ash out and then put our lid back on. We smelled a faint smell of smoke when we were finished due to the glow of the fire pit, but it wasn’t as pungent as usual.
The 360 Degree Airflow technology inside the Kitchen alone really creates these truly unique fire pits. You don’t have to be a camping enthusiast to appreciate – or be mesmerized by – the way a fire burns in the Kitchen Alone. If you really can’t stand the smoke from a fire pit or you find yourself hosting backyard fires almost weekly, then you should consider a Single Stove.
For just one Yukon fire pit, you’ll have to pay $450 back and if you choose to buy all the included accessories Yukon’s Ultimate Pack, you can spend up to $800. These are pretty hefty price tags, so you should consider how much you want to invest in a backyard fire pit. That said, a Solo Induction Cooker is definitely worth the money.
For the full backyard fire experience, you can also purchase accessories like roasted sticks, fire pit tool and color pack. The Solo Stove doesn’t come with a built-in countertop, but you can buy a cap to make the fire pit work better when not in use. You can also buy a Yukon’s Ultimate Pack, which includes everything except a lid.
