Walsh aims to hold the perfect Dubai record with Cazadero

No coach running on March 25 boasts a better record of meeting in the Dubai World Cup than American coach Brendan Walsh.

Born in Ireland, living in the United States, Walsh competes two against two at Meydan Racecourse. The perfect record is thanks to Extra Parfait . Sticks winner of the UAE Derby (G2) in 2019 and wild child who succeeded in the Al Quoz Sprint (G1) in 2021. He advanced to the $1.5 million Al Quoz Sprint again with the 2nd place winner. cazadero . 5 year old son of street feeling Walsh’s adventures will bring back fond memories for Walsh, who worked in Dubai with Godolphin before starting his own coaching career.

“Everything about the year we won the Derby with Plus Que Parfait is a good memory,” he said of his breakthrough victory in Dubai four years ago. “To be able to go out there after having spent so much time there before and win is magical, something you dream of. Unfortunately, due to COVID, I didn’t do the trip with the Extravagant Kid. but that was again amazing, really unbelievable.”

Walsh says there are similarities between Cazadero and the Extravagant Kid, although Cazadero has a few miles fewer runs than his steady friend, who won Al Quoz in 8th place. Owned by Qatar Racing in partnership with Marc Detampel, Fergus Galvin and Barry Clohessy, Cazadero, 5, won 4 of 11 starts, including the Nearctic Stakes (G2T) at Honeysuckle. Gelding was bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, who also won the Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) at 2 o’clock Churchill Downs and was runner-up in the six-part Bachelor competition at Oaklawn Park in 3rd place. Cazadero was originally raced by Stonestreet, which eventually sold him during the Keeneland April 2022 Race Horse Sale, where Galvin signed off on a $50,000 purchase from the shipper. Eaton Sales. Cazadero won the Nearctic Stock six months later and now has $364,905 in career earnings.

“Of course he fits the bill, he prefers a longer distance than the usual 5 or 5 1/2 stretches we have in the US, similar to the Extravagant Kid,” says Walsh. “I think he would also like the six straight hairs (1,200 meters). He’s an easy enough horse to train; very straightforward.”

Cazadero will team up with 1st place equestrian champion Tyler Gaffalione, who will make his UAE debut this year.

“Tyler rides a lot for me in the US,” added Walsh, who won’t be making the trip to Dubai.

“It’s been a very busy weekend here,” he explains. “I have Quite mischievous same day at Fair Grounds in Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) as well as Santin And calculation force in the big stakes at Turfway, so between jobs and races I couldn’t manage to get out.

“Roger Horgan has passed,” he continued. “When Kiaran McLaughlin retired, we were lucky enough to have him on our team from Kiaran’s.”

Watching from afar the victory would be no less sweet if Cazadero kept the record of Walsh Dubai intact.
