Volvo’s highest-mileage plug-in hybrid is about to disappear

The Volvo S60 sedan — which in Recharge form is currently the Swedish automaker’s most efficient plug-in hybrid — is being discontinued in the US

Engine1 first reported that S60 production would end at Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina plant (located near Charleston) this month. That was announced by Volvo in 2021, when the automaker announced that its factory in South Carolina will run entirely on electricity in 2024, ahead of its other factories—even those in China, where electric vehicle demand is much higher.

The cessation of production in the US leaves open the possibility that the S60 will continue to be imported here, but Volvo has now confirmed to Green Car Reports that this will not be the case.

“The S60 will not continue to be imported in the US,” Volvo spokesman Russell Datz told Green Car Reports. “About 120,000 units have been sold globally since the Charleston factory opened in 2018.” The V60 wagon version is also expected to disappear, although it comes from a factory in Belgium rather than South Carolina – although Volvo hasn’t officially announced that part yet.

Including final sales in the 2025 model year, which may be slightly truncated, the S60 will be sold in the US for 25 model years, spanning three generations. In addition to starting production in the US, the final generation launched for the 2019 model year also brings a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Initially, only the sporty S60 Polestar Engineered was offered as a plug-in hybrid, but Volvo later introduced a more affordable Recharge model.

Volvo confirmed that the closely related V60 T8 and Cross Country sports car variants will also continue until 2025, although it declined to comment on what happens after that. These models are produced for the US in Belgium.

Coming out of retirement, the S60 Recharge leads Volvo’s other plug-in hybrid models in electric range (at 41 miles) and fuel economy (31 mpg combined), thanks to its 14.9 kwh battery pack The larger model arrives for the 2023 model year. Previously the model with the smaller 10.4-kwh package was rated at 22 miles of electric range and 30 mpg combined.

Volvo has incorporated plug-in hybrid models into its electric vehicle product strategy more comprehensively than any other comprehensive automaker. It even goes so far cover its exhaust pipe. But now the focus is shifting entirely to electric vehicles. The SUV EX90 runs entirely on electricity has begun production in South Carolina, and North Star 3 from Volvo’s sub-brand will soon follow.
