Volvo Trucks Malaysia launches heavy duty EV main engine – FH, FM, FMX; Range 300 km, estimated RM2 million

Volvo Trucks Malaysia today launched its line of all-electric heavy-duty movers in Malaysia, which includes the FH, FM and FMX model lines.

The Malaysian market launch also marks the Southeast Asian market launch for EV mainstream engines, and thus Malaysia is the first country in the region to receive the FH Electric, FM Electric and FMX Electric models. Integrated logistics provider Swift Haulage Berhad are the first to adopt electric mainstays from this newly launched product line.

Volvo’s lineup of electric main engines powered by electric powertrains includes two or three motors that produce up to 490 kW (666 PS) and 2,400 Nm of torque depending on the application. with battery capacities from 180 kWh to 540 kWh from two to six battery packs.

Transmission is via a 12-speed I-Shift transmission – the same as on Volvo’s internal combustion engine trucks – on all three models. Power breaker (PTO) applications for the FH Electric, FM Electric and FMX Electric models can be mechanical, electromechanical, or electrical.

Charging time for a full charge is 10 hours with a 43 kW AC charge via a Type 2 connection, or 1 hour and 55 minutes with a 250 kW DC charge via a CCS2 connection, providing a range of up to 300 km with a total weight 44 tons (GCW); these numbers apply on all three models FH Electric, FM Electric and FMX Electric.

Volvo Trucks cites independent tests that have found that the FH Electric is 50% less energy efficient than an equivalent diesel-powered FH main engine, under similar driving conditions.

Available configurations are 4×2, 6×2 and 6×4 shaft layouts; all three model lines have air suspension shafts. The FH Electric, FM Electric and FMX Electric models feature an aerodynamic cabin design to reduce wind resistance and thus optimized battery range. The range is visually defined by Volvo Trucks’ signature V-shaped LEDs.

Inside, Volvo’s main electric motor lineup features Dynamic Steering to further aid in truck handling and the driving instrumentation features a 12-inch high-resolution display with chrome surrounds and halo lights to improve visibility and thus improve safety, says Volvo Trucks.

This is complemented by a 9-inch side display that serves as the centerpiece of the vehicle information system, which the driver can control via a combination of touch controls and buttons on the steering wheel, providing driver safely and conveniently. interact with the vehicle’s systems, adds Volvo Trucks.

Among the safety features across the range of electric motors are side collision avoidance assist, which is a type of blind spot monitoring for trucks; This uses radar to monitor areas to avoid collisions with other vehicles in the truck driver’s blind spot when changing lanes.

As for pricing, Volvo Trucks Malaysia won’t give exact initial numbers as the nature of truck fleet orders and custom packages makes pricing difficult, but it can be revealed that estimates very wide for Volvo FM Electric with six-battery sets will be in the range of RM2 million.
