Vietnam veteran taking care of his family is reunited with his dog for the last time

John Vincent is a Vietnam Marine Veteran in New Mexico. When Vincent was admitted Raymond G. Murphy Medical Center VA Last week, he was unable to bring 5-year-old Yorkie, Patch, with him. Sadly, Patch had to be adopted because Vincent had no friends or family nearby that could take care of him. Vincent may not have much time left, so one of his requests is to see Patch one last time.

Vincent enlisted in the Marines for three years in Vietnam. He was born on a farm, where he was usually around with dogs, but he’s had more of Patch lately, and he fell in love with the little dog right away. He even rides a Harley, and Patch will ride with him wearing his own little goggles.

Patch got its name because of a small white patch on its fur. At the time, Vincent also only had a patch of hair on his chin. So, right away, Vincent felt a connection to Patch and even referred to him and his dog as “patch brothers”.

The patch has been delivered Animal Welfare Albuquerque shelter shortly after Vincent was admitted to the hospice. When Vincent made his request to be reunited with Patch one last time, there was no hesitation. Danny Nevares, the director of the Animal Welfare Foundation, says they will do whatever they can to comply with his request.

A heartwarming reunion

When Patch was brought to Vincent, he was overjoyed to see his father again. Immediately, he started licking Vincent’s face, then curled up on his lap. Vincent is grateful to finally see his dog again.

“Yeah, that’s me, that’s dad,” Vincent told Patch. “Are you happy to see me? Nice to meet you.”

Nevares said that during the ride to the medical center, Patch was very quiet. However, just as they neared their destination, the little dog started whimpering. It was almost as if he knew his dad was nearby. Suddenly, the expectations were too exciting for the little dog.

“It’s an honor to have this veteran’s last wish come true,” Albuquerque Animal Waters posted.

Although this is Vincent and Patch’s last reunion, they will never forget each other. Although Patch will have a new family to take care of him, Vincent will always hold a special place in Patch’s heart. He is a lucky dog to live with such a caring father.
