Video: Ducati explains the technology and characteristics of its MotoE project
Today is a big day for Ducati Motor Holding, as it is doing public unveiling of upcoming MotoE racing bike.
The first electric motorcycle under the Ducati brand, the “V21L” is not only the pinnacle of Ducati motorcycle knowledge, but also a testing ground for the Italian brand to understand the future of two-wheeled racing.
The big highlight of the Ducati MotoE project is the maximum power figure of 150 hp (110 kW), equivalent to a maximum torque of 103 lbs • ft (140 Nm). All of this propelled the Ducati MotoE bike to over 170mph at the Mugello track.
Ducati is using an 18 kWh battery pack, which operates at 800 volts when fully charged (80% of that charge can be achieved in 45 minutes with the onboard 20 kW charger).
The battery pack weighs 243 lbs, which is almost half of the V21L’s total 495 lbs mass.
Other items of note are Ducati’s dual cooling zones, one for the motor and inverter, and one for the battery pack itself. The bike is carbon fiber drip, but the “front frame” frame and side swingarms are both made from cast aluminum.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the whole project, however, is how Ducati views MotoE’s involvement, as the company is using its racing platform as a testbed for future technologies, especially in the field of racing. when battery technology has more power to use for races.
This is clearly an investment in Ducati’s future, and if previous seasons are any indication, racing will be interesting as well.
