Used electric cars should be avoided? Model S, Chevy Bolt top Consumer Reports list

Used car prices has dropped 10% over the past year, with electric vehicles seeing the largest decline. But one Used cars are not reliable can erode some of the savings from buying low with a more expensive repair bill.

Consumer Reports on Monday is marked Used cars to avoid—with several hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles among them. The list is based on data from the publication’s Annual Auto Survey, which Owner Reported Problem with their vehicles for specific model years. The electric vehicle models listed here have a higher than average number of years with problems.

Electric vehicles – including hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles – make up more than 20% of the 60 models flagged as particularly unreliable. These include the 2022 Rivian R1T and Chevrolet Bolt EV from the 2019-2022 model years, as well as certain Tesla Model S and Model X models.

While not necessarily a reliability issue, the Tesla Model S and Model could be a safety concern.

This follows a 2023 survey in which Consumer Reports found that Plug-in cars are more likely to get into trouble. On average, electric vehicles have 70% more problems than internal combustion vehicles, while plug-in hybrids have an average of 146% more problems than non-hybrid cars.

Many studies have emphasized that Electric vehicles are more likely to get into trouble than other types of vehicles necessarily because of their powertrain but it’s often because of the overly complicated interface that automakers choose to adopt. Automakers’ drive to include high-tech features along with electric powertrains appears to be the problem.
