University of Michigan sacks president after allegedly having an affair with a university employee

The University of Michigan dismissed Mark Schlissel as president following an adultery allegation and appointed former university president Mary Sue Coleman as interim president.

The move comes after the school received an anonymous complaint about Schlissel’s “inappropriate relationship” with a university employee. Officials said Schlissel, 63, also used his university email account to communicate with staff “in a manner inconsistent with the dignity and reputation of the university,” members of the council. University of Michigan administrator writes on the page school website.

In addition, the university released 118 email exchange sites “illustrates this inappropriate behavior” and also includes a letter sent to Schlissel explaining his decision to remove him.

In one of the emails, Schlissel called the employee “sexier,” and last month, Schlissel told that individual, “Can you get me a private meeting,” at the Big Ten Championship game. The three-page letter ended up notifying Schlissel that he had 30 days to leave the school principal’s house.

Schlissel’s revelation took place a few months after Detroit Free Press Report stress to board members. Last October, Schlissel announced that she would step down from the university in June 2023.

Schlissel has been the school’s president since 2014 and has a base annual salary of $927,000, according to Related press.

Coleman’s tenure as interim chairman will last at least until this summer when board members can appoint a new chairman. She led the University of Michigan from 2002-2014.

“While grieving the circumstances, I am honored to be asked to once again serve the University of Michigan,” she said in a statement. “When I left the UM campus at the end of my 2014 presidency, I said that serving this wonderful university was the most rewarding experience of my professional life. I was delighted to serve once. in this important interim role.”
