Ukrainian armed forces operate interesting Taiwanese mortar drones

Taiwanese drone manufacturer DroneVision is giving Ukraine a very interesting machine – the Revolver 860 is a combat drone with an unusual weapon system.

Anti-drone nothing new at this point. They are drones capable of destroying targets with a variety of missiles, bombs or other weapons. The advantage of a good military drone is that it can carry out combat missions without the direct presence of a human, helping to preserve the lives of your forces. DroneVision’s Revolver 860 is a highly operable machine with a unique striking mechanism.

The Oryx open source intelligence group announced that DroneVision is delivering Revolver 860 drones to Ukraine. The number of drones delivered is unknown, but former commander of pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk Igor-Girkin-Strelkov said that Ukraine has received 800 mortar drones. Taiwan does not deliver them directly to Ukraine. Instead, these drones were sold to Poland with permission to transfer them to Ukraine.

This is actually a common practice, allowing DronesVision to separate itself from the Russo-Ukrainian war. On the other hand, weapons manufacturers and countries of origin often need to agree to the transfer of their systems to third parties. Interestingly, we don’t even know when the Ukrainian Armed Forces received the Revolver 860, but it is rumored that this drone was used in early June.

The Revolver 860 is a very interesting combat drone. As you might have guessed from its name, the Revolver 860 has a rotating drum that can be loaded with up to eight 60 mm mortars. It is also possible to use other standard sizes, such as 81 mm or 120 mm, but the drone will not be able to carry many of these heavier ammunition. As the drum rotates, mines land on unsuspecting enemies, their vehicles or infrastructure. This is a relatively simple system that delivers quite an impressive level of accuracy.

The Revolver 860 can stay in the sky for up to 40 minutes and fly up to 20 km away from the operator with a set of eight 60 mm mines. It uses 8 foldable propellers mounted on 4 arms. When fully loaded, it weighs 42 kg. The Revolver 860 is a foldable drone that is relatively easy to move around. Even its remote control system weighs a little over 2 kg.

The secret to the Revolver 860’s success is its accuracy. Operators can take advantage of real-time HD video transmission, enabling an extremely precise target attack. The operators of these drones have become so skilled that they can target the open windows of houses or the hatches of armored vehicles. Although not completely quiet, the Revolver 860 can hover at respectable heights, hidden in the noise of war.

These abilities have a double effect. First of all, they destroy the sense of security that the Russians may have been farther from the lines of communication. Second, they allow for quite a bit of damage to Russian forces in Ukraine.
