Tyson Fury said it would be a joke if he didn’t confront Anthony Joshua
Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have been on a collision course forever, even if it goes roundabout because of Joshua’s failures.
And Fury believes that will happen.
The reigning WBC heavyweight champion has floated the idea of retiring but insists he wants to fight Joshua in a major all-British bout first.
The two sides have been negotiating but have not come to an agreement.
“I don’t think I can retire today,” Fury said on the High Performance podcast. “Because I need a fight with Joshua. We’ve been trying to do that fight for years. “It’s the fight that people want to see.
“It’s the fight I want to see as a boxing fan.”
Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) is scheduled to take on Derek Chisora (33-12, 23 KOs) for the third time on December 3 in London. And the fight with Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship could not be more exciting.
But “King Gypsy” said it would be a “farce” if at some point he did not meet Joshua.
Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) is about to lose in a row to Usyk. Fury blocked Dillian Whyte for six innings in April.
“For the past four or five years, there has been this three-headed monster: me, [Deontay] Wilder, Joshua,” Fury said. “Joshua and Wilder have been killed, and I am the last one alive.
“Suddenly you have some newcomers: Joe Joyce, Daniel Dubois, Usyk ruined the party. Now there’s a new amount of health that wasn’t there 5 years ago and it’s like, ‘Can you beat this person?’.
“But I think it would be a fucking farce if Joshua and I didn’t fight in this day and age.”
