Twitter has announced that it will no longer post ads that “contradict scientific consensus”. But is announcing a plan to destroy shareholder value really the smartest choice, amid a hostile takeover bid for Elon Musk?

This month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published a new and alarming reportemphasizes the urgency of the climate crisis – “immediate and deep emissions reductions”, they write, are needed to turn the tide on global warming.
More than ever, meaningful climate action, from all of us, is critical. Today – on #EarthDay2022 – we’re sharing more of our work to fuel the climate conversations happening on Twitter, along with our latest sustainability commitments.
A climate-driven approach to advertising
People around the world use Twitter to connect with others who are passionate about protecting our planet. Last year, we introduced a Dedicated theme to help people find personalized conversations about climate change. And, to support the conversation around #COP26, we’ve implemented front bed – authoritative, trusted hub of information on a wide range of key topics, like the science that advocates for climate change, available in the Explore, Search and Trends tabs.
To better serve these conversations, misleading Twitter ads that are contrary to scientific consensus on climate change are prohibited, consistent with inappropriate content policy. We believe that climate denialism on Twitter should not be monetized and that misleading ads should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis. This approach is provided by authoritative sources, such as Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Evaluation report.
We recognize that misinformation about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet. In the coming months, we’ll have more to share about our work to add authoritative, authoritative context to climate conversations taking place on Twitter.

Elon Musk’s hilarious Twitter takeover bid is a challenge for existing shareholders, to decide between taking Musk’s money and running, or trusting the current management team to maintain shareholder value.
So it seems rather silly to announce that shareholders can expect lower returns in the future, because of sober decisions about whose money Twitter is willing to take.
Maybe Musk’s takeover effort will be fruitless, or maybe the majority of Twitter shareholders are eccentrics who don’t care about profits. But the carelessness and ill-timed timing of the announcement by Twitter management added to the entertainment value of an already amusing situation.
