No plans to impose driving age limit: Transport Minister

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said there are currently no plans to limit the age of Malaysian drivers. StarAnd the Transport Secretary admitted that there have been calls in the past for age limits to be imposed on drivers to prevent accidents.

Asked to comment on a road safety study conducted by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) that found that 30% of drivers above 60 years old were still actively driving on the road, Loke said that while age was a factor, there were other reasons against imposing a limit on the age of eligibility to drive.

“Tun Dr Mahathir is 99 years old [years old] and he still drives. Even my father still drives,” the Transport Minister said. Loke added that it would be difficult to impose a driving ban on seniors, especially if they live in rural areas or if they need to move in an emergency.
