Shoppers who visited Louisiana Trader Joe’s were met with more than a change in savings! A viral TikTok video shared with The Shade Room shows employees giving away at least $2,800 worth of free food. Why? Break the fridge at the Baton Rouge store.
In the clip, Tina Michelle asked an employee, Allie, to confirm the food donation and the bill for $2,852.
One employee explained: “So our fridge broke down and so we gave away everything that was cold or frozen.

Trade Joe’s agents tracked the free inventory by scanning items, but the increased tag totals were on the store—not on the customer.
An employee called out, “We are helping people today.”
More footage Tina shared shows customers with carts stacked on top of each other – eggs, frozen food, seafood, meat, etc.
The original video had over 11 million views and was posted the day before Easter. It had hundreds of comments, essentially praising the grocery store’s decision to give away food instead of throwing it away.
One commented, “That’s great because most stores will throw it in the trash, sadly. Another reason to continue supporting TJ.”
Another added, “Very smart, they are scanning items so they can get a refund from the refrigeration processing company.”
Meanwhile, there are some comparisons with other stores. For example, another person alleged, “Same thing happened at Walmart, but they made us throw everything away…..I was so angry!!!”
The updated video has more than 500,000 views on TikTok. As of Monday night, Trader Joe’s has yet to respond to the video on its social platforms or website.
