Toyota Tacoma 2024 revealed – with hybrid option and donkey suspension bucket seat

2024 Toyota Tacoma is finally here and it is being offered with a lot of different features and configurations. But even with all the differences through this pickup truck product line, one thing is consistent: It’s a new product truck, not just a warming model compared to the previous generation. There’s a lot to cover, so we’ll break everything down into sections so it’s easy to find the interesting details. Keep scrolling to check them all out.

Chassis Toyota Tacoma 2024

Body and chassis

The Tacoma built on the same TNGA-F body platform used by tundra, Sequoia And Land Cruiser. All of those are significantly larger than the Tacoma. Shrinking it down essentially shortens the frame and wheelbase, resulting in the loss of a forward crossbar and a slightly shorter front overhang than on larger trucks. Several other crossbars and mounting points have also been adjusted, and some parts of those members feature slightly thinner gauge steel to save on cost and weight, as the Tacoma is not as large or as heavy-duty as it is needed. larger than vehicles.

New body, looks like a miniature tundra with some hints of the old Tacoma, mostly high-tensile steel, with a bit of aluminum in the top and for the tailgate. A little bit suprise, Toyota will continue to offer both an extended cab and a quad cab. Extended cabs only come with 6-foot beds while quad cabs can have standard 5-foot beds or optional 6-foot beds. Interestingly, the extended cab now seats just two, leaving the rear area entirely dedicated to storage with lockable bins.

As for the suspension, the front end of every Tacoma uses a coil spring, double wishbone design. But the back is different. The base models SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner still use a live shaft with leaf springs. This is the only TNGA-F vehicle that uses them. Higher trims feature a new multi-link solid shaft design with coil springs. And there are even suspension variants when it comes to suspension, as there are dedicated versions for TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, Limited, TRD Pro and Trailhunter. The Sport version has stiffer suspension for road use, the Off Road version has a remote Bilsteins gas tank for off-road use, the Limited version has electronically adjustable damping, the Pro version has a remote adjustable Fox shock manual (plus a weapon upgraded front controller), and the Trailhunter has an Old-Man Emu remote reservoir shock. The latter two are also 2 inches taller at the front and 1.5 inches taller at the rear than other comparable Tacomas. They are also available with electronic anti-roll bar disconnection for the front suspension to increase engagement by 10%.

The brakes are also upgraded compared to the previous Tacoma, as all are four-wheel discs brake. TRD versions have larger front brake discs and mixture models add larger rear. The steering system also has a change with electric power assist.

As for capacity, Tacoma has max drag Rated 6,500 pounds and maximum payload is 1,709 pounds. These drops depend on powertrain, cabin and trim configurations. Toyota also boasts about 7% more bed volume and 300% more storage space under the rear seats on the quad cab.

Toyota TRD Pro 2024

Engine and gearbox

The base Tacoma engine is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder. It’s almost the same across all models down to the motor itself, but has multiple outputs. SR has the least powerful version at 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. This is mainly because to reduce the price, Toyota has removed some of the cooling equipment and anti-vibration mounts that are only necessary for the higher power versions. That extra power is 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque with the eight-speed automatic, or 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque with the six-speed manual. Both gearboxes are available with two- or four-wheel drive.

The other engine on offer is also a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder – but yes battery and an electric motor. The electric motor produces 48 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and is powered by a 1.87 kWh nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Power combined with the petrol engine is 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the huge amount of power and torque, the hybrid engine adds 2.4 kW of built-in power to all types of accessories and tools. This hybrid version is only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, Toyota did not announce energy saving the numbers for this engine or the entry level numbers.

Two-wheel drive is the standard powertrain option with traditional all-wheel drive with a low-range transmission available. They all come with limited-slip differentials as standard. However, an electronically locked rear differential is available on four-wheel drive models and is standard on the TRD PreRunner, the all-terrain two-wheel drive model. The Limited is available with all-wheel drive, but only with the hybrid engine.

Toyota also notes that the CRAWL Control off-road cruise control system will operate more quietly. Downhill control is still available, and manual transmission models have a clutch cancel button like the previous Tacomas.

TRD Pro and Trailhunter

Two of the Tacoma versions deserve special attention, especially one of them, Trailhunter, is a completely new version. We’ll talk about that, but first we need to talk about TRD Pro. This is Tacoma’s most performance-oriented off-road version. It only comes with a hybrid engine, it has the aforementioned adjustable Fox shock absorbers, disconnecting the swingarm and lifting the suspension. It features an off-road front bumper, wide fenders, ARB steel rear bumper and rebound hooks. Those fenders include 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T all-terrain tires. Toyota also gives the approaching, breaking and departure angle numbers for the TRD Pro at 33.8, 23.5 and 25.7 degrees, respectively. There are many cameras to assist with on-road control, as well as connecting trailers.

Toyota TRD Pro 2024

But the real performer of the TRD Pro is the pair of bucket seats. These are no ordinary seats. These seats have a suspension system. Specifically, it has a set of ball joints and vertical and horizontal oil-free shock absorbers. Air pressure can be adjusted according to personal preference and weight. And the idea is that these seats will help keep the driver and passenger from being tossed around. This will help reduce fatigue and improve visibility and confidence when off-roading. They can also be locked in place when you get back on the road and want a little more feedback directly from the truck. And not surprisingly, they were crash test, they are fully compatible with all factory safety devices, but they also retain heating and ventilation features, along with most power adjustments. The only thing lost is the power recline due to the lack of space with the suspension components.

Now we come to the new addition, Trailhunter. It shares many things in common with the TRD Pro, such as the bumper and fender flares. It also has the same tyres, albeit wrapped around unique bronze wheels. Those brass accents extend to the classic grille and interior accents. The suspension is the same, although it uses Old Man Emu shock absorbers instead. It also chooses a utility bar on the bed with MOLLE mounting points for attaching a variety of devices. In bed, Trailhunter is on board compressor to fill tires or other items.

Furniture and other features

The Tacoma’s cabin has been completely redesigned, but it still feels very solid with chiseled panels and rubberized grips and handles everywhere. Standard equipment includes a 7-inch instrument cluster display and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. They can be upgraded to 12.3 and 14 inch screens respectively. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard with the option to charge the device wirelessly.

Toyota has added a few other nifty features inside. With the upgraded JBL sound system, there’s a center speaker in the dashboard that can be removed and used as a portable Bluetooth speaker. And on the driver’s side of the cabin, there’s a hidden QR code. This code will take the owner to a website that has 3D printer plans for all sorts of accessories like lanterns or kits.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 2024

The Tacoma also comes standard with safety and convenience features. It has automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams.

availability

First 2024 Toyota Tacoma will go on sale later this year. At first, there were only non-hybrid versions. The hybrid version will go on sale in early 2024. Pricing has not been announced. Stay tuned for that as well as some other details like fuel economy in the coming months.
