Performance will be the subject of Toyota’s show in 2022 Tokyo Auto Shop. It will go to the annual event to reveal a mysterious racing concept car called the GR GT3 and showcase an upgraded version of the Hybrid GR Yaris The hot hatch is sold in several global markets.
Both cars were shrouded in darkness, but we liked what we could see little of. It seems that the GR GT3 concept is not an evolution of Supra, as you might reasonably expect. It is characterized by a long front end with angled lights and ventilated fenders, a large rear spoiler with swan-neck-like brackets, and taillights extending into the quarter panels. The proportions are almost reminiscent of the Mercedes-AMG GT, or even electric Lexus concept aired in December. However, the rear fender has a different shape Lexus.
It’s too early to tell what lies under the long hood, especially since the GT3’s regulations are pretty open-minded. One bottom line, though, is that the GT3 cars have to be loosely based on production models to draw similarities. Whatever we’re looking at, Toyota will need to build and sell a street-legal version of it to compete with Chevrolet Corvette and Acura NSX, among others, in races around the world.
The latter concept is described by the company as a “fully adapted” version of the GR Yaris. Here again, details are few and far between but we notice an air vent integrated into the hood and a larger roof-mounted spoiler than on the production car. “Full tuning” also suggests that Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division has made modifications to the turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 261 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. – 265 pound-ft of torque in standard tuning.
