Toyota has been having trouble with regulators lately. However, it seems the company isn’t done solving the problems yet: A new internal investigation finds that Toyota cheated on crash tests for seven Japanese models.
Based on a release from Toyota earlier this week, those seven vehicles were “tested using methods other than government standards.” Toyota claims that there are “no performance issues contrary to law or regulation,” meaning the cars still meet all required standard government crash tests, however no problem. official Tests are difficult to prove. Affected vehicle models include, according to Toyota:
- Crown, produced from 2014 to 2020
- Isis, produced from 2015 to 2018
- Sienta, produced from 2015 to 2022
- Lexus RX, produced from 2015 to 2022
- Corolla Axio produced from 2015 to present
- Corolla Fielder produced from 2015 to present
- Yaris Cross produced from 2015 to present
The Lexus RX is especially interesting, being the only vehicle on the list available on North American shores. Toyota claims it falls under the “Engine Control System Tuning” category in “engine power testing,” but it’s hard to know whether that refers to power ratings, fuel economy, or gas. waste or something else. However, American Lexus has not mentioned this issue so it may not be applicable here.
The affected models still on showroom floors – Axio, Fielder and Yaris Cross – have suspended production and placed a stop-sale order until the vehicles can be properly recertified. However, Toyota maintains that these cars are completely safe to drive for those who already own one. I guess we’ll have to see if the relevant regulators agree.
