Total War: Rome Remastered has made one of the most beloved entries in the strategy series more accessible to a modern audience. Now, its final content update makes it more accessible to modders, including the removal of restrictions on the number of cultures, building types, and factions.
Patch 2.0.4., for now, also includes UI tweaks, bug fixes, and AI improvements in battles. Later changes include everything from better pacing for units going through portals, better wall protection, better movement for cannons, and more persistent attacks. By far, however, the list of biggest changes is revisions. Feral Interactive said they worked directly with modders to implement the changes. In addition to removing the hard-coded limits, there are now more conditions and variables available for modifiers to tweak. For example, modders can now edit the combat AI through data files, to change the order in which units are launched.
While Feral Interactive says this is the final content update for the game, the game will continue to be supported to “ensure stability and compatibility, when required.”
I am a huge fan of this. The previous Total War series has been heavily revised, and it’s great for the developers to take their time before continuing to open up their games to their audiences. Similar Stardew Valley made changes designed specifically for the modifier, with many things in progress, its developer is currently moving to a new project.
Should you play Rome Remastered, mod or not? Nate thinks it a massive remake of the grand strategy game, but still pales in comparison to the series’ modern incarnations. However, perhaps he was forgetting a bit of fun when the civil war broke out.
