Tokina’s second-generation 400mm F8 mirror lens available in eight mounts for $260: Digital photography review

Tokina has announced an updated version of the 400mm F8 mirror lens that refines the optical stabilizer and adds a T-mount system that Tokina says will improve lens performance and allow the lens to be used with eight mounts different cameras.

The Tokina 400mm F8 N II S mirror lens is the successor to the 400mm F8 NS mirror released back in July 2020. The updated lens is composed of six elements in two groups — a difference from six components in five groups are used in the original version. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 115cm (45.3″), has a 67mm front filter thread, and ranges in size between 82–112mm, depending on whether you use the SLR or mirrorless mount version, as mirrorless versions have a longer adapter.short flange distance of mirrorless cameras.

The 400mm F8 is entirely hand-built and features a built-in T-mount using a standard 42×0.75 male lens; By using different adapters, which are placed on the lens prior to shipment, the lens will work with Canon EF, Canon M, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds, Nikon F, Nikon Z camera systems , Pentax K and Sony E-mount. Naturally, the T-mount means that the lens can be easily adjusted from one mount to another using another mount adapter.

As is the case with all mirror lenses, this lens features the characteristic ‘donut’ bokeh, which is generally considered less aesthetically pleasing than the bokeh of regular optical lenses, but comes at a price pay to get a longer focal length in a relatively small body. Tokina mirror lens 400mm F8 N II S Is currently listed on Tokina’s website for around $262, but it doesn’t seem likely to actually order at this point. The first orders, when they go live, are expected to ship starting December 24, 2021.
