RED RIVER, NM — Three people were killed and five injured in a shooting at an annual motorcycle rally in a New Mexico town Saturday afternoon, the mayor said.
Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun said in a video posted on Facebook that the shooting at around 5pm left three people dead and five victims transported to nearby Denver, Albuquerque and Taos hospitals.
Calhoun said the 41st annual Red River memorial motorcycle race has attracted about 20,000 cyclists to the town.
Calhoun said the violence occurred between the two retail stores and involved motorcycle gang members.
“The shooters have all been caught,” she said. “There is no threat to the community at all.”
New Mexico State Police earlier said in a Twitter post that two people were killed and six injured in the shooting.
Most of Main Street in Red River, where the shooting happened, has been closed for investigation and law enforcement has asked businesses in the area to close on Sunday, Calhoun said. know in a statement.
“Our number one priority is the safety and welfare of the local community,” Calhoun said. “We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we get through this very difficult time together.”
Some of the victims are being treated at Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, about 58 kilometers southeast of Red River. The Taos Police Department and the Taos County Sheriff’s Office secured the hospital, state police said on Twitter.
State police said one victim was airlifted to a hospital in Denver.
The victims were also transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, which was secured by the Albuquerque Police Department, KRQE reported.
Mayor Taos Pascual Maestas issued an emergency declaration placing the town under a curfew from 10 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday with an immediate ban on the sale of alcohol.
