This Kirby’s Dream Land 2 ROM hack adds color to the Game Boy Classic
Although Nintendo has officially called the time on Kirby’s 30th Anniversary, puffy pink fans seem to go on with all sorts of creations. One thing in particular that has caught the attention of the wider Nintendo community is the new ROM hack for the 1995 release. Kirby’s Dreamland 2 – added proper support for Game Boy Color.
Creator ‘kzero‘ describe Kirby’s Dreamland 2 DX as an “extended hack” of Dream Land 2 – fully coloring every single visual asset of the game, while enhancing the overall experience. Here’s a closer look:
And here are the full details on how exactly this ROM hack improves the game. It’s also not just a color upgrade. It goes a step further with improved animations, elimination of lags, new menu settings, etc. It also retains Super Game Boy support:
Full coloring – All backgrounds, tiles and textures have been fully colored, taking full advantage of GBC’s graphics capabilities.
Additional visual snazz – Smoother fades, some color animations, and other small details to push the hardware a bit more.
Speed reduction removed – GBC double speed mode is enabled to reduce virtually any lag present in the original game.
Brand new Settings menu – Change the Color of the Status Bar, toggle the color animation in the Status Bar, or toggle the BGM of the Animal Friends interrupting the level music.
SGB support intact – Play with SGB contour enabled in an emulator that supports unofficial “SGB+GBC” mode.
