The Rivian Large+ battery is a software-locked Max Pack

  • Some Rivian R1 vehicles with Max Pack batteries will be labeled Large+
  • Vehicles with Large+ battery packs have software-locked capacity
  • It’s unclear whether Rivian will allow Large+ owners to unlock additional battery capacity later.

Rivian is selling refurbished vehicles 2025 R1T and R1S with the largest Max Pack locked at a lower usage capacity.

First discovered by RivianTrackrThe new option is called Large+ and matches the capacity and price of the actual Large Pack offered on the Dual Motor R1T and R1S models. That means a usable capacity of 109.4 kWh, compared to 141.5 kWh for the unlocked Max Pack and 92.5 kWh for the Standard Pack.

Rivian is choosing to produce software-locked Max Pack vehicles to Large+ specifications due to high demand and the desire to deliver vehicles to customers sooner.

“To meet high customer demand and accelerate deliveries of our second-generation Dual Large, we are updating the range software of some Max Pack R1 vehicles to match the starting price and range (up to 330 miles) of our Large,” Rivian spokesperson Mikhael Farah told Green Car Reports. “These Dual Large+ vehicles offer all the performance, range, and features customers expect in a Dual Large.”

IN Posts on ThreadsRivianTrackr also claims that the Large+ pack can be charged to 100% during everyday use, citing anonymous company sources. That seems plausible, since charging to 100% of the Large+ pack’s software-enabled capacity doesn’t actually use 100% of the pack’s physical capacity. But Rivian still recommends the same charging methods, meaning 70% for everyday use, 85% for “long trips,” and 100% for long trips only.

The software limitation also leaves open the possibility that customers can pay to unlock larger battery capacities at a later date, but Rivian isn’t saying anything right now. Customers also can’t specify the Large+ option in the Rivian configurator. They’ll still have to select “Dual Large” and will likely be contacted by Rivian to select the Large+ option.

Software-locked battery packs aren’t new. Tesla has limited battery capacity in some Model S configurations to avoid having to produce multiple pack sizes. BMW also limits the fuel tank capacity on range-extended versions of the i3, though that’s to comply with California regulations.

R1 models receive a slew of updates for 2025, fixing bugs that current owners want to change, adding new features to attract more customers, and ensuring future compatibility with long-awaited changes. R2 lineupexpected in 2026.
