The rise of 4×4 vehicles in Australia: Sales tracked from 2013 to 2022

Australians have bought almost 1.6 million new 4x4s over the past decade, equivalent to about 14.5% of total new car sales between 2013 and 2022.

Meanwhile, the annual share of these lifestyle-focused jobs has steadily increased from 12.2% a decade ago to 18.1% last year.

These are some of the interesting findings in our latest analysis of a particular vehicle segment – in this case, the segment that has become the largest and most lucrative segment in Australia.

Instead of focusing on the entire ute market, we’re focusing on 4x4s – the majority of which are dual cabs, often favored by private buyers.

We are used to the fact that 4×4 cars are the best-selling vehicles in the country, ever since Toyota Hilux won the crown for the first time (and it still does to this day) in 2016.

Today, we often see a trio of cars in the top five overall, with Ford Ranger And Isuzu D-Max there or there, mostly 4×4 not 4×2.

We thought it would be interesting to look at some of the changes during this period.

Back in 2013, the 4×4 ute market was much more focused on usability, with sales of 138,084 units from this segment equivalent to a 12.2% share of the overall market.

The Toyota HiLux topped the 4×4 category in 2013 just as it does today, with sales of 29,344 units. Next is NISSAN Navara (21,758) in the D40 and D22 generations, before Mitsubishi Triton (20,546), Ford Ranger (16,913) and Holden Colorado (13,947).

There were 14 nameplates in the Ute 4×4 segment in 2013, including models that have since disappeared including the Land Rover Defender pickup truck, SsangYong Actyon Sports, Great Wall V-Series and Nissan Patrol cab-chassis .

Fast-forward to 2022, Ute 4×4 car sales are 195,208 units, an increase of about 41% over raw volume. More talking is the market share growth to 18.1%, up 48%.

Toyota HiLux ranks first in the 4×4 Utes range and the whole market by 2022, with sales of 47,329 units. Next is the Ford Ranger with sales of 43,128 vehicles.

In the top 5 are Mitsubishi Triton (23,953), Isuzu D-Max (20,124) and classic cars. Toyota Landcruiser 70 (11,390 sales despite being discontinued due to lack of stock).

There are 18 nameplates in the segment, four more than in 2013, with temporary new entrants including GWM Ute, LDV T60, SsangYong Musso And jeep fighterplus boom ram 1500 And Chevrolet Silverado American V8 pickup truck.

By the way, a number of nameplates have come and gone between 2013 and 2022, mainly Mercedes-Benz X-Class and Foton Tunland. XE.

Despite this growth, Utes 4×4 was the second largest segment by market share in both years, behind Small Cars in 2013 and Midsize SUVs in 2022. It’s just that the market has become concentrated than.
