The parties of Germany to present the union agreement
Olaf Scholz, of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) widely expected to take the helm. Angela Merkel will resign after 16 years as Prime Minister.
Scholz’s SPD, the pro-business Liberal Democratic Party (FDP) will unveil their coalition agreement in Berlin at 3:00 p.m. local time (9:00 a.m. ET), the FDP said. in a statement earlier on Wednesday.
A final round of negotiations is expected on Wednesday, ahead of a press conference in the late afternoon.
Once the deal is announced, it will be passed on to members of the broader party for review.
This after a end of September election and two months of negotiations to form a new government.
A tripartite alliance is not a traditional partnership. FDPs are typically aligned with right center rather than left-leaning SPDs and Greens.
So far, a sticking point in the coalition’s negotiations has been funding the Greens’ ambitious climate plans, in which Liberal Democrats oppose tax increases.
A new government will spell the end of the Merkel era, and appointed his center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) to the opposition after 16 years in power.
