The joys of large format photography
What if every time you pressed the shutter button, you had to pay $5? What will you shoot? Large format photography is overwhelming, but it gives you images that are simply not possible in 35mm or even medium format. This neat video will show you the 4×5 filming process and some of the images you can create with it.
Coming to you from Willem Verbeeck, this interesting video follows the process of shooting 4×5 footage of Los Angeles. 4×5 film fully shrinks both 35mm and even medium formats, providing nearly 15x larger negatives than full frame. And with that terrible negativity comes an almost unbelievable level of detail. Furthermore, large format cameras offer useful functions that are not available in smaller formats, unless the camera uses special lenses. The downside is that large format photography requires a lot of technical expertise, and every 4×5 costs negative about $5, and that doesn’t even include development costs. However, there’s nothing quite like seeing a large format print live, and the unique look and stunning levels of detail are simply not possible. Check out the video above to see it in action with Verbeeck.
