Two Candler County delegates put their lives on the line to save two innocent canine friends. Saving these baby mice meant running towards a potential explosion, but even this couldn’t stop them from their heroic mission.
Captain O’Brien and Deputy Coursey of the Candler County Sheriff’s Office answered calls about an explosion at a nearby home. Upon arrival, it appeared that everyone in the compound was out of harm’s way, but the billowing smoke made clear the terrifying reality.
As the wind changed direction and blew smoke from an RV on the property, two terrified baby mice closed their eyes to the delegates. These dogs were trapped right next to the burning RV, in danger of soon being engulfed by the flames.

Both dogs were kept within reach of the burning RV, one tied to a leash and the other locked in a metal crate. Employees on the other side of the property are cooking from the heat of the fire, meaning these baby mice likely won’t be burned alive for a moment. Delegates know what they have to do.

With bolt cutters in hand, the officers ran toward the frightened cubs, feeling the welding heat through every step they took. Their arrival seems to bring immediate peace to trapped canine friends, as they immediately submit to the officer’s helping hand.
An employee tried to cut the leash the first dog was tied to, but quickly realized the only option was to remove the collar and release it. Once the first puppy is rescued and runs to safety, it’s time to rescue the next puppy.
The second dog was trapped inside a boiling metal barrel, which was evident when he heard the pain of the employee trying to move the barrel away from the fire. The officer didn’t have any gloves to protect his hands from the heat, meaning his only option was to release the latch and allow the scared dog to run free. Moments later, the dogs were freed from the ring of fire, all thanks to the brave actions of their animal-loving representatives.
The dogs were quickly photographed moments after their miraculous rescue, and deputies were able to assess their current living situation. After realizing that the dogs deserved so much more than they were giving, the owners left the dogs in the care of the city.
The dogs are now in the loving arms of a skilled foster family and are currently recovering from their traumatic ordeal. Although our hearts break at the thought of the pain they endured during this horrific event, we are delighted that they now have the opportunity to enter a beautiful future.
