The Crown Season 5: Truth check the most dramatic moments

How are Windsors and Romanovs really connected?

The sixth episode of the fifth season opens in World War I England, when King George WU (Richard Dillane) received a letter from the British prime minister suggesting that the government was willing to send a ship to Russia to save its pro-Russian relatives, the Romanovs, who had recently been deposed during the Russian Revolution.

Then a prisoner Tsar Nicholas II (aka Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov) was awakened by a soldier to announce that he and his wife Tsarnia Alexandra (aka Alexandra Feodorovna) is emotional, prompting Nicholas to exclaim, “That’s cousin George!”

However, their hopes were unfounded, and just minutes later, their entire family was murdered — thus revealing that the royal family had refused to help.

The episode then shows Queen Elizabeth II preparing for a meeting with Boris Yeltsin, President of the Russian Federation. It was revealed that Elizabeth and Prince Philip were related to the Romanov family, which prompted Philip to do some digging.

So how do families stick together?

Like Crown describes, in fact, George refused to help save Nicholas, despite the two having a strong bond.
