The BMW M3’s big grille isn’t going anywhere

A prototype version of the mid-life updated BMW M3 sedan has been spied for the first time during testing in Europe.

The exterior changes to this particular M3 prototype appear to be very similar to those on a spied M4 prototype that was captured a couple of months ago.

The front bumper has been tweaked with revised front air intakes, as well as a different LED headlight signature.

The spied prototype appears to retain the current model’s controversial double kidney grille that plunges almost from the bonnet to the front lip spoiler.

While there don’t appear to be changes on the side of this spied M3 prototype, there’s a revised tail light signature.

At this stage we haven’t seen any imagery of the mid-life updated M3’s interior, and it’s unclear what changes could occur. It received the latest BMW Curved Display setup last year which comprises a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

It’s also unclear if BMW will alter what’s powering the M3 with the mid-life update. The current model is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine producing 353kW or 375kW, depending on the variant.

This is mated to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, also depending on the variant. Drive is also sent to the rear wheels only or through an all-wheel drive system.

The current-generation BMW M3 was revealed in 2020 alongside its M4 two-door coupe counterpart. They both launched in Australia in 2021.

BMW has since launched the retro M3 50 Jahre special edition, M3 Touring wagon, as well as the lightweight M3 CS.

At this stage it’s uncertain when BMW will reveal the mid-life updated M3, nor when it will launch in Australia.
