Tee time, British Open matches 2023: Full field, schedule, groups for Round 2 at Royal Liverpool

To say the 18-hole standings at Royal Liverpool are surprising might be an understatement. While local lad Tommy Fleetwood was certainly capable of sitting out a shot at the Championship Open heading into the second round on Friday, a late foul from Emiliano Grillo and an early club lead by amateur Christo Lamprecht were certainly shocks.

Fleetwood and Lamprecht will have to wait until afternoon in Hoylake, England, as they try to build on firmer conditions in their lead, which will certainly be less than the soft turf they took advantage of on Thursday. The South African amateur will take the first lead in the race at 7:53 a.m. ET with the British runner following him a few hours later at 9:48 a.m.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will join Fleetwood for the second consecutive day. He was sandwiched between the trio of Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay and Hideki Matsuyama at 9:37 a.m. before Cameron Smith, Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark left for work at 9:59 a.m.

Meanwhile, Grillo will be the one to speed up from a 5-point lead. The Argentine played the last 14 of the bottom seven to jump to the top of the leaderboard alongside Fleetwood and Lamprecht at the end of Round 1. He started the second round of 18 at 3:25 a.m. with Sahith Theegala and Dustin Johnson. Rory McIlroy will be hoping to be accompanied by Jon Rahm and Justin Rose at 4:58 a.m. Max Homa got his first taste of weekend competition in a major championship after a stellar opening round with Tyrrell Hatton and Collin Morikawa at 5:09 a.m.
