Tasmania transforms outpatient services with online booking, eReferral . system

WHY IT IMPORTANT

Each year, the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) provides approximately 600,000 visits across 46 different specialties. These include specialist diagnostic evaluation, screening and treatment; ongoing management of chronic and complex conditions; and care before and after admission. About 10% of these services are new appointments for people on the outpatient waiting list while the remainder are for services that do not have a waiting list, such as oncology services and for review and manage people who need ongoing care or monitoring.

By 2024, the state government projects the population of Tasmania over 70 years old to increase with the group aged 85 and over expected to grow by 85%, from around 12,600 in 2020 to around 23,000 over the next two decades. This demographic shift is expected to impact future demand for health services, especially demand from people with chronic illnesses.

The four-year strategy allows THS to respond to this expected increase in demand by devising strategies that will build the capacity needed for the future.
