Subaru develops EyeSight for manual transmissions – debuting on BRZ in Japan this fall

Currently, the only way to own a Subaru with EyeSight driver assistance is to use an automatic transmission. However, this will change later this year when the Japanese automaker has announced the development of EyeSight for manual cars, with BRZ will be the first model in Japan to get it this fall (from September).

According to Subaru, the EyeSight system for the manual transmission BRZ builds on the existing system already used in automatic transmission variants. Along with that is pre-collision braking system (automatic emergency braking), adaptive cruise control, lane departure and roll warning, vehicle launch warning and rear sonar warning. These features will combine with the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert available for the manual BRZ.

“While maintaining high performance in collision avoidance, minimizing collision damage and reducing driver workload, the new EyeSight system is now combined with character-matching control. driving and operating of manual transmission vehicles. This enables the system to operate in a wide range of real-world situations, providing a high level of driving enjoyment and reassurance,” the company said in the release.

The features of Subaru’s EyeSight system are based on stereo camera technology that can see two color cameras placed near the rearview mirror to scan the road ahead for unforeseen dangers. Since its initial launch in 2008, total global sales of Subaru vehicles equipped with EyeSight have reached more than 5.5 million units.

With BRZ and TOYOTA GR86 built at Subaru’s Gunma factory, the latter will also receive the same update. The WRX is also another model that will receive EyeSight for manual transmission variants.
