A man accused of fatally shooting Lady Gaga’s dog walker during a botched pet robbery last year was accidentally released from prison Wednesday and remains free, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says. with NPR.

James Howard Jackson has been detained on charges of try to kill people in connection with the February 2021 shooting, as well as the theft of two of the Grammy-winning singer’s French Bulldogs.

But after attending court hearings at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center on Tuesday, Jackson was released from custody the next day due to what the sheriff’s department called a clerical error.

It appears that in an attempt to speed up the legal process, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has dismissed existing charges against Jackson to charge the 19-year-old instead of the grand jury indictment. . Those allegations were later filed with the court according to a number of new filings.

Unfortunately, the new information did not reach all relevant departments, including the prison where Jackson is being held.

The district attorney’s office told NPR in an emailed statement: “Mr Jackson was subsequently released from custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “We’re not sure why they did that.”

Jackson and two other men were accused of being involved in the fatal shooting of dog walker Ryan Fischer, who refused to let go of the pop star’s wounds even with a gun. Fisher suffered a serious injury that resulted in one of his lungs is collapsing after his initial discharge from the hospital. He eventually needed to amputate part of it, but has now recovered.

French bulldog has been returned to the authorities two days later by a woman who said she found them.

On Thursday, the district attorney’s office said it was working with the Sheriff’s Department to get Jackson back in custody. They asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s department.
