State of Rest Survives Inquiry to Win Cox Plate

Coach Joseph O’Brien admitted he was getting edgy Oct. 23 as a stewards’ inquiry into the Ladbrokes Cox Plate (G1) lingered on for over 20 minutes, but it surely was definitely worth the wait as Teme Valley Racing’s State of Rest  was allowed to keep the race following a protest from Craig Williams on the runner-up Anamoe.

It was, perhaps, O’Brien’s most audacious Australian adventure. He has won two of the last four runnings of the Melbourne Cup (G1), but he didn’t have to jump through half as many hoops to win those. This was a reward for patience so it was fitting that he had to wait so long after the race to be officially announced the winner of it.

Almost a year to the day since State of Rest finished fifth in an average Vertem Futurity Trophy (G1) at Doncaster, the son of Starspangledbanner  burst through a gap towards two furlongs out and bravely fended off the challenge of Anamoe to land one of Australia’s most prestigious races by a short-head under Cork native Johnny Allen.

Verry Elleegant ran third.

But the drama did not end there. Williams immediately signaled his intention to protest upon dismounting from Anamoe for interference suffered aboard the Godolphin-owned runner inside the final furlong and the inquiry began.

It took properly over 20 minutes to type out and O’Brien stated he was getting apprehensive the longer it went on.

He stated: “It was an anxious wait alright. We have been fairly assured that if the inquiry had been anyplace that we have been used to racing in that we’d have been tremendous, but it surely went on for therefore lengthy that we have been beginning to get a bit edgy and nervous. I suppose the one factor was that there was nothing I might do from the place I used to be!

“Johnny and Mark (Energy) dealt with all of it very properly and we’re very happy that they got here to what we thought was the suitable end result. Johnny gave the horse essentially the most unbelievable journey.”

O’Brien heaped reward upon the workforce who got here collectively to make the journey to Moonee Valley for the $5 million group 1 doable, describing the trouble concerned as mammoth. The colt’s earlier begin had been a victory within the Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T) Aug.7 in New York.

The coach added: “It is simply unbelievable. I am delighted for the homeowners, the supervisor Richard Ryan and Jim Coburn. All of the credit score has to go to Mark Energy and MJ Doran, although. The 2 lads traveled all the way down to Australia and been with the horse for the final variety of weeks. Mark Hackett as properly, who organized the entire journey.

“It was a mammoth effort from everybody, between all of the vets who needed to do all his scans and trots up and all the pieces that was required. All of the workforce right here at dwelling as properly, those that taken care of him by his quarantine over right here. It was an enormous workforce effort and I am simply so delighted that we managed to tug it off. It was a really special occasion for all of us.”

State of Relaxation was bred by Dermot Cantillon and Meta Osborne’s Tinnakill Bloodstock and their son Jack tried to place the achievement into phrases.

Cantillon stated: “I’d all the time have in my head that the Melbourne Cup is Australia’s biggest race and Australia’s finest race is the Cox Plate—so it’s clearly a thrill for us to have bred a winner of it.

“It is a fantastic thrill specifically for my dad, who has all the time had a particular reference to Australia having lifted the Melbourne Cup twice with Classic Crop and Media Puzzle as racing supervisor for the Smurfit Household.

“Greater than anybody I’m delighted for him, he has all the time had this unimaginable affection for the superb sport that’s Australian racing and for him to win Australia’s finest race as a breeder is a good testomony to a profession of exhausting work.”
