Spence-Crawford? In June? | BoxingInsider.com

Color I cautiously skeptical. In this regard, I’m probably like many martial arts fans out there when I hear whispers that welterweight kings Errol Spence and Terence Crawford will take down in June to see who will be crowned champion. undisputed divisional enemy. While it would be great if news, originally reported by Rings, is true, the fighting world has gone down this path before. After all, negotiations between the two boxers broke down last year. With that said, it looks like these two decorated title lists really want to settle things in the ring – which usually means the fight will be made at some point.

I say “usually” because we have now entered an era where more major battles are broken than the opening bell. Take, for example, the negotiations for Fury-Usyk. Or the negotiations for Fury-Joshua a few months ago. Either the long-awaited rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, or the earlier negotiations between Team Spence and Team Crawford. However, it looks like there could be real movement here, as many outlets are pointing to sources that have at least partially supported the whispers. Sure, Crawford posted “April Fools” on social media, but does that mean the fight isn’t happening? The evidence – at least for now – suggests the opposite.

The truth is that this match is far too long to come. Indeed, it has in the past been sold by date as it is today – albeit only slightly. After negotiations between the two sides broke down last year, it’s understandable why some fans decided the match simply wouldn’t happen. And indeed, they can still be proven right. Yet again, at least there seems to be a lot of movement here between the two camps. While the Spence-Crawford matchup probably won’t be as big as the one against Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia this spring, it will nonetheless be a major event in the sport.

To both these men are undefeated talents who are extremely skilled. Spence holds the WBA, WBC and IBF world weight class titles while Crawford holds the WBO. The list of enemies that have fallen under each man’s gloved hands is impressive. Amir Khan, Mikey Garcia, Shawn Porter, Kell Brook, Yordenis Ugas and Danny Garcia are just a few of the more than 60 opponents these fighters have faced and conquered. Now – hopefully – they will finally have a chance to fight each other.

Let’s see.
