Spain’s Rodri and Alvaro Morata banned over Gibraltar song


UEFA has punished Spain international Alvaro Morata And Rodri banned for one match for singing about Gibraltar’s sovereignty claim at the team’s European Championship victory celebrations.

The Gibraltar Football Association has filed a complaint with UEFA after Morata, who led Spain to glory at Euro 2024 Germanyand Rodri led thousands of fans in singing “Gibraltar is Spain” at a ceremony in Madrid on 14 July.

UEFA’s disciplinary body banned both players for “failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, violating the basic rules of decent conduct, taking advantage of sporting events to display unsportsmanlike behaviour and discrediting football, and in particular UEFA”.

Both players will miss the Spain match. European Nations Championship opening group at Serbia on September 5.

Gibraltar lies at the southern tip of Spain and has been a British overseas territory for more than 300 years.
