Tony Hawk tweets, explains: Former professional skater makes fun of people who don’t recognize him
Although Tony Hawk is one of the most influential athletes in skateboarding, some people still don’t recognize him in public.
Hawk, 53, who is also known as Birdman, shared the exchange on Twitter with an employee at the coffee shop he visited on Friday morning. The tweet adds to Hawk’s collection of brief conversations with people who confused his identity in public.
At the coffee shop this morning:
Girl behind the counter: (no joke) “did anyone tell you you look like Tony Hawk?”
Me: yes, so much that I sometimes write about it.
Her: haha, this is your coffee
The other girl at the exit: (tilts towards me as I step out): “You really look like him”– Tony Hawk (@tonyhawk) December 10, 2021

His meeting at the coffee shop was just that when he was gone it was too late for him to notice. He has shared multiple times in which people told him, “You look like Tony Hawk!” before realizing that he is not a doppelganger. Hawk continues to share humorous interactions intended to mock his often mistaken identity.
At the store, the aisles wander, the staff approach.

Me: I’m looking for a light bulb

Not long before speaking to the cafe staff, Hawk shared a healthy interaction with someone who recognized him while visiting a skate park. On October 17, he tweeted a dialogue he had with a kid who just wanted his picture taken.
Kid at the skate park:
“Are you Tony Hawk?”
It’s correct
“Will you still be here?”
I’m not sure what that means but I really hope so.
“If I went to get my phone from there, would you still be here to take a picture with me?”
I will still be here, and I hope to stay as long as possible.– Tony Hawk (@tonyhawk) October 17, 2021
Tony Hawk’s history with fans
Despite retiring from a 16-year professional skateboarding career in 2003, Hawk is still known as one of the sport’s most influential athletes. He is most famous for becoming the first professional skater to hit the 900 mark at the 1999 X Games.
Since retiring, he has appeared in a number of movies and TV shows and occasionally shows off some of his old tricks at local skate parks. Following his achievement in 1999, Hawk founded his own production company, 900 Films. He also owns his own skateboard company, Birdhouse, and has partnered with Activision to relaunch his own video game in 2020.
Hawk is also known to be very communicative with his fans. He always interacts with people who approach him in public, even if they don’t immediately recognize him. After interacting with an angry RV driver in July 2020, Hawk was approached at a stop and added details of the strange encounter.
Hawk, whose net worth is about 140 million dollars, said it’s not uncommon for him to meet people who don’t recognize him in everyday life. However, he has shared some of his most memorable encounters on social media in recent years. In 2019, he tweeted a screenshot of texts with the caption of an auto service, “my life is a meme.”
He also notably shared his experience at a ticket booth in August 2019. The ticket agent is said to have recognized Hawk, but incorrectly called his name when they read his ticket. .
Approaching the ticket counter, the agent looked up and exclaimed “I know you… you are a… celebrity… or a sports guy… skateboarder! And your name is…” (glances at my ticket)
