Space Blues Catches Smooth Like Strait in BC Mile
Favored Space Blues sat a perfect, inside stalking trip in the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF (G1T) Nov. 6 at Del Mar and closed previous frontrunning Smooth Like Strait by a half-length to win his third consecutive race.
Smooth Like Strait held the runner-up spot, clear of late-running Ivar in third. Raging Bull was fourth and Got Stormy fifth.
The winner, an Irish-bred 5-year-old son of Dubawi owned and bred by Godolphin, raced a mile under William Buick on a firm turf course in 1:34.01. He paid $6.20.
Space Blues was backed to 2-1 favoritism upon bringing a two-race win streak into the Mile, having captured the Aug. 21 Sky Bet City of York Stakes (G2) and Oct. 3 Qatar Prix de la Foret (G1) in Europe for trainer Charlie Appleby.
Godolphin and Appleby’s other Mile entrant, Master of The Seas , was scratched after acting up in the starting gate.
