Governor Kathy Hochul looks set to win comfortably in next week’s Democratic primaries.
With a clear commanding leadership role, she followed the Rose Garden strategy against her rivals, Representative Thomas Suozzi of Long Island and New York City public advocate Jumaane Williams. She has spent millions of dollars on TV commercials and digital ads. But she’s mostly been on political conflicts, avoiding appearing in person during the election campaign. Smallpox cases in monkeys are on the rise
Monkeypox, a virus long common in parts of Africa, is spreading globally. About 23 cases have been reported in New York, but health officials believe there are many more going undetected. Most of the reported cases were in gay or bisexual men or men who had sex with other men. The city says most cases are mild so far, but even mild cases can cause a painful rash that can take two to four weeks to resolve. I ask Sharon Ottermanhealth care provider for Metro, explained.
How does it spread? Can it spread through respiratory droplets the way coronavirus can?
The virus is spread mainly by skin-to-skin contact with the sores of an infected person.
It appears to have spread primarily through sex and intimacy, although it is not officially considered a sexually transmitted disease. Scientists say it can also be spread through contact with sharing objects with an infected person, such as towels or sex toys.
It can be spread through respiratory droplets, which are produced when we speak, sneeze or cough, but that is likely to last through close contact. There is also some evidence that it can be spread only through small aerosols, like Covid-19, which means it can be spread through the air.

You write that testing is still rare, which sounds as troubling as it was in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. How are monkeypox tests handled?
There are only about 70 public laboratories in the country that can test for smallpox, the family of viruses that cause smallpox in monkeys. To perform the test, the health care provider must call the local health department and talk about whether testing is warranted, and currently, health officials in New York will do not test everyone who has just come with the rash.

Large outdoor events where people do not have skin-to-skin contact are not considered places where people can contract monkeypox. There’s no reason not to attend an event like a parade. In fact, the risk of getting Covid-19 at many events is probably higher.
Again, skin-to-skin contact is the main route of transmission of smallpox in monkeys, so health officials say it is important that people check themselves for sores carefully before going to places where smallpox is spread. such points before going to crowded places like saunas or baths – and stay home if they notice anything or feel unwell.
What about the CDC response? What steps has CDC taken to control this outbreak, and have they been sufficient?
