Solheim Cup 2024 TV schedule, coverage: Teams, format, rules, scoring, captain’s picks, where to watch

The 2024 Solheim Cup at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia marks the second consecutive year the event has been held and the 19th year of the international tournament overall. Normally held every two years, the Solheim Cup is being held consecutively because event organizers want the event to follow an even-numbered year schedule.

The Solheim Cup has always been held in odd-numbered years, but when the Ryder Cup, which previously took place in even-numbered years, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the scale of that event began to overshadow the Solheim Cup.

The 2023 edition was a real thriller. Held in Andalusia, Spain, the event ended in a 14-14 draw, meaning Europe, who won the 2021 tournament on American soil, retained the Solheim Cup. At one point, the Americans led 13-11 before Europe stormed back to take a 14-13 lead with Carlota Ciganda playing the hero for the hosts to retain the Cup.

It was a painful defeat that left the Americans hungry for revenge on home soil, and in the US’s interest, they did not have to wait two years to get revenge and claim their first win since 2017.

Format and rules of Solheim Cup 2024

The first two days of the Solheim Cup (Friday and Saturday) each feature two sessions of different types of golf. The United States and Europe will play foursomes early in the day and four-ball at the end. On Sunday, golfers will complete 12 one-on-one singles matches.

Below we’ll break down each type of match you’ll see this week.

Four balls: Teams of two players representing each country compete against each other. Each of the four golfers will play their own ball and the lowest score between the two players on each team will count towards the hole. The two scores that are not picked will be disqualified.

Group of four: Teams of two players representing each country face off against each other. However, the golfers must alternate hitting the same ball until it is holed. For example, if Player A tees off on hole #1, that means she will hit all her tee shots on odd-numbered holes. Player B will tee off on all even-numbered holes.

Single: The finals are held on Sunday only. Singles consists of 12 one-on-one matches played throughout the day.

Solheim Cup 2024 Scoreboard

Event: Each match is worth 1 point. Matches that end in a tie each receive 0.5 points. The first team to reach 14.5 points over the three days of play wins the Solheim Cup. If all 28 matches end in a 14-14 tie, the team holding the Solheim Cup (in this case, Europe) retains the cup.

Matches: Each hole is scored independently with the lowest score winning. If both teams or players have the same score on a hole, the hole is considered a tie with no advantage awarded.

As teams or players advance through the round, points can be accumulated or subtracted from the total score of the match. For example: If Team/Player A wins the first two holes, they will lead by 2 UP. If Team/Player B then wins the third hole, Team/Player A’s lead is reduced to 1 UP.

A match may end early if the winning team or player has a lead greater than the number of holes remaining. For example: If Team A leads by 4 points with three holes remaining, then the team wins the match 4&3.

Concession: Unlike stroke play golf, teams or players do not have to complete each hole. Strokes (usually putts) may be conceded through sportsmanship if they are deemed to be possible to make or if attempting the stroke would not result in winning or halving the hole.
