The VEP RFID tag can then be used to pay tolls through RFID lanes at toll booths in Malaysia, as well as RM20 per access road fee (RC) has been in place since 2015. VEP RFID will be linked to the vehicle owner’s Touch ‘n Go eWallet account to pay tolls and RCs.

While the RM10 fee for VEP RFID tag is cheaper in comparison RFID card RM35 used by Malaysians to pay tolls, the former will also incur a toll agency service fee of RM29.50, making it a bit more expensive. Postage will also charge a separate fee.

“All foreign vehicle owners are encouraged to register, install and activate their VEP RFID tag within the next four months before October. This is to avoid any problems when traveling by foreign vehicle between the two countries in the near future,” said the Minister of Transport.

JPJ will have full authority to refuse vehicles entering Malaysia if these vehicles do not have VEP RFID tags after the enforcement date. The minister added that the ministry will also have the authority to stop foreign vehicles from leaving the country if there are unresolved issues, such as unpaid fines or traffic summons, among others. other matter, under the Road Transport Act 1987.

According to Loke, the decision to begin enforcing the use of VEP RFID tags from October is to allow foreign-registered vehicle owners ample time to register and install their tags.

“Based on records, there are currently more than 200,000 foreign vehicles registered for VEP but only 70,000 vehicles have RFID tags activated. Therefore, this four-month period will help prevent any form of vehicle owners from suddenly moving between the two countries and causing unnecessary traffic congestion,” he said.
