Royal Dutch Shell Plc plans to build a biofuel factory in Singapore to help the company achieve its halving goal emissions to 2030.
The company is planning to build a factory of 550,000 tons a year that can produce hydrogen from cooking oil and animal fat, which are then used to produce diesel oil for trucking, aviation fuel or chemicals, according to a statement. This facility is subject to the final investment decision.
Shell is reducing raw processing capacity at the Pulau Bukom complex – where the biofuel plant is located – as it seeks to remove all net emissions from its operations and most of the greenhouse gasses from the fuel. that it sells to customers by 2050. The biofuel plant will be one of the largest in Asia when built, said Shirley Yap, Senior Vice President of Shell Singapore. Oil traders are looking to produce around 2 million tons a year of sustainable aviation fuel by 2025 and disposal first millions of tons of plastic waste every year globally.
Shell is building a unit that will improve the quality of pyrolysis oil, a liquid made from hard-to-recycle plastic waste. It will have a capacity of 50,000 tons a year, making it the largest in Asia and handling the equivalent volume of about 7.8 billion plastic bags. No costs are provided for the investment.
In addition, Shell is also exploring a carbon capture and storage hub in the region, and plans to work with a variety of clients including in the energy sector.
