As tears streamed down Shakur Stevenson’s eyes after his 2016 Olympic gold-medal loss to Robeisy Ramirez, the New Jersey-born player vowed never to let history repeat itself.

So far, Stevenson has kept his word, winning all of his 17 matches in the professional ranks. With each passing victory, Stevenson’s confidence grew. At 24, Stevenson patiently cut through opponents’ defences, before punishing them round after round.

Now, as he continues his relentless preparations for the upcoming £130 unification match against Oscar Valdez on April 30, Stevenson is sick and tired of being asked to wait his turn. Even now, with just a few fights and admittedly in the infancy of his career, Stevenson believes he should only be named when discussing the world’s best boxers.

“I love Bud [Terence Crawford],” Stevenson said in an episode of Blood, Sweat and Tears. “I think Canelo is great too. But for me personally, I feel like the best boxer in the world.”

While pound lists are often subjective, both Crawford and Canelo Alvarez have come out at the top of the list.

Of course, Alvarez has earned his title over the years by dominating the competition. As a result, the Mexican star has won world titles in four separate weight classes and continues to run across countless weight classes in search of a suitable challenge. In Crawford’s case, his hometown team of Omaha, Nebraska, put together a pristine record of 38 wins, not a single loss.

Stevenson, on the other hand, is still building his own dignity. On April 30, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Stevenson believed a win over Valdez would lead to more worldwide recognition, which Stevenson believes he desperately needs.

In his view, a victory is only a formality. However, even as Stevenson saves on the possibility of his third world championship title, he believes the victories will continue to be valuable throughout his career.

So with the former Olympic silver medalist believing his victory milestone will continue to rise, he is focusing his attention on growing his overall profile.

“I think the main thing is to make yourself a superstar. That’s the main thing for me. I want the world to know that I’m one of the best boxers to ever do that so I have to keep training and keep improving. ”
