Sega cools blockchain games as exec calls them ‘boring’
After announcing that it will start selling NFT back on April 21, Sega seems to have cooled off on the idea of blockchain gaming, despite still investing in the field otherwise it is unlikely it will regain its footing in the future.
When talking to Bloomberg News (Thank, VGC), co-CEO Shuji Utsumi stated that he finds blockchain games “boring”, confirming that Sega herself has shelved her own game development plans. He also stated that the most important characters of the brand will not be affiliated with NFT to avoid devaluing IP.
That said, Sega is still allowing third parties to produce NFTs for lesser-known characters from franchises like Three Kingdoms And Virtua fighter plane. It’s still open to the idea of getting more involved as the technology matures, but for now, is keeping a reasonably safe distance.
Utsumi has been pretty clear about his thoughts on the matter, stating:
“Action in money games is boring. If the game is not fun, what’s the point?”
We couldn’t agree more. Whether Sega will change her mind again in the future remains to be seen, but Utsumi’s comment will certainly give some hope to those who are against the idea of NFT and blockchain technology.
