SC postpones BCCI plea seeking extended term for Ganguly, Shah

The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned a hearing of the Commission for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) seeking an extended term for chairman Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah to Thursday. The panel led by Ganguly took charge of BCCI in October 2019.

The call also includes changes in other amendments to its constitution.

BCCI calls on the court to amend a rule in its new constitution which requires administrators to undergo a three-year ‘cool-down period’ after six consecutive years in BCCI or any state association any.

The ‘cool-down period’ is a key recommendation made by the RM Lodha Judiciary Committee aimed at reforming cricket management in the country.

In its 2018 ruling, the Supreme Court examined Justice Lodha’s conclusion firsthand that “the game would be better without the auction oligarchs”.

So the court upheld the recommendation that cricket administrators undergo a “cool-down period” before proceeding with elections to the BCCI or state associations.

Ganguly started as a secretary at the Bengal Cricket Association in 2014, after which he became the president of the association. He was re-elected in September 2019 before moving to BCCI in October of that year.

Meanwhile, Shah was elected general secretary of Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in 2014 and assumed the position of BCCI secretary in 2019.
