Ryan Garcia might not have played badly against Gervonta Davis in a super friendly two weeks ago, but he ended up losing by knockout thanks to a perfect dart from Davis. Things like that tend to have an impact. Then it was not surprising when news broke on Monday that Garcia had decided to part ways with legendary coach Joe Goosen. The two have been together for about a year. Although Garcia was known as a talented, agile and tough boxer, it was clear that Davis proved to be the more skilled of the two men.

This wasn’t a huge shock to many, but the loss to Davis clearly prompted Garcia to move elsewhere to find a coach that’s right for him. Obviously he has to develop some style if he wants to be a top level fighter. Whether switching to a new trainer will improve Garcia’s ring technique remains to be seen. Sometimes the problem is the fighter. Other times, though, a new coach can really make a difference. After all, Freddie Roach and Emanuel Stewart worked wonders for Manny Pacquiao and Wladimir Klitschko. However, there is no magic bullet that can change a boxer’s luck in the ring.

Moreover, this is the second famous coach Garcia has left. He previously worked with Eddie Reynoso, the respected coach of Canelo Alvarez. However, Garcia will remain a very popular fighter no matter who he chooses to train him. However, Garcia needs to get back on his winning streak if he is to continue to be the favorites – so finding the right coach is crucial. Garcia is also willing to listen and learn from that coach. Garcia is a young man, so time is on his side. However, time has a way of moving quickly.
