Richardson Hitchins: “If Floyd [Mayweather] Give me gas, I think he will have another star”

Just a few years ago, Richardson Hitchins couldn’t help but smile.

After making a name for himself at the amateur level, Floyd Mayweather Jr was pleased with what he saw from Hitchins. So at his first available opportunity, the newly introduced Hall of Famer took the nearest pen and paper and sent it to Hitchins his advertising agency, Mayweather Promotions.

With Hitchins believing he could become one of the more notable names in the sport of boxing, he envisioned world titles and piles of cash falling at his feet. However, since putting his name on the dot in 2017, Hitchins has been unhappy with where his career has gone so far.

More than anything, Hitchins, who holds a spotless record through 13 professional competitions, sets himself up as a man without a doubt who can’t miss the future star in the sport of boxing. In his view, if Mayweather weren’t listless when it came to his personal career, there would be a lot of buzz around his name.

“I feel like a big 140-pound dog in the league,” Hitchins said in an interview with YSM Sports Media. “They just didn’t give me a chance. My promoters don’t believe in me the way they should. If Floyd facilitates me and makes me more active, I think he will get one more star. He told me he would put me in the position of having to fight for a title to get that star spot but I don’t really see him doing that.”

When Hitchins signed his initial contract, his relationship with Mayweather Promotions seemed like the perfect match. The New York-born player fought three times in both 2017 and 2018. His activity level will only increase in 2019, when he crosses the rope on four perfect occasions.

Since then, however, Hitchins has been pushed to the edge. In 2020, Hitchins only entered the ring twice. In 2021, he only has one competition. As Hitchins continues to sharpen his tools behind the scenes, the 24-year-old is hungry for more public recognition.

Before that, on his most recent show, Hitchins made it look super easy in front of his highly touted former prospect, Malik Hawkins. A match earlier, Hitchins had dominated the former world title, Argenis Mendez.

For now, while it’s still fairly early in Hitchins’ career, he’s urging Mayweather to put more emphasis on his budding star growth and power. Even now, with just 13 competitions under his belt, Hitchins believes he’s not only capable of competing with the best boxers at 140 pounds, but beating them as well.

Ultimately, from Hitchins’ point of view, Mayweather Promotion seems to be more focused on Gervonta “Tank” Davis. That said, Hitchins is fully aware that at some point, the spotlight will be on him. And when that happens, he believes the rest of the world will quickly find out what he already knows.

“With me fighting Josh Taylor and them, it’s not a matter of me if I’m ready, it’s a matter of my activity level. I don’t fight. If my promoter really stands behind and keeps me active and makes the public see me on TV, then I’ll be on another level. They focus on other fighters like Tanks and other fighters that Al [Haymon] take. I felt like they weren’t really focused on me. When that focus comes to me, you will all see that I am a superior boxer.”
